description

The author of the film is Bogdan Major (born in 1945), who, after graduating from the Faculty of Electronics at the Warsaw University of Technology, worked professionally as an electronics engineer in semiconductor technology in Toruń. From an early age he was interested in photography, and during his studies he was involved with the “Stodoła” Film Production Club, the “Kwant” Film Discussion Club, student radio broadcasters and, together with his wife Maria, the Literary Section of Radio Maryja. Bogdan bought his first camera after university to document family and social life. Maria’s brother-in-law Lech Szumigaj is also the author of some of the films or parts of them.

Part 1

A film made in Sępólno Krajeńskie in 1980.

The Szumigaj family is sitting at a set table, on which there can be seen a cake with birthday candles that have just been blown out. Lech’s wife Elżbieta is holding their son Bartek wrapped in a burlap cloth in her arms. Sitting next to the woman is Lech, as well as her mother Łucja Walczak, mother-in-law Helena and brother-in-law Piotr. The parents, together with their older daughter Ania, are bathing little Bartek in a bath tub. During their walk, Ania is searching for an Easter nest of gifts. After finding the basket, the little girl is smiling at the camera. Bartek also gets his first nest from his parents.

Part 2

The Majors (Bogdan, Maria, Tomek and Joasia) and the Shumigajs (Lech, Ela, Ania and Bartek) are posing to the camera by the igloo they have built. Amused children emerge from the structure and play in the snow. The families are also accompanied by Ela’s brother, Witek, and their mother, Lucja Walczak. Other winter activities on this day include skiing and sledding down the hill by the lake. The families spend time at Helena’s (Bogdan’s mother) flat. The woman is also visited by her other sons, Wojtek and Piotr. The children are playing with their dog Szuszu and by the Christmas tree they are posing with the adults to the camera.

During a walk, the family have a snowball battle. Ania Szumigaj plays in the flat, a dressed Christmas tree can be seen in the background.

Part 3

Film shot in 1978 or 1979. Ania is playing with her parents in front of the house, later together with another child she is sitting in the sandpit. Lech and Ela are playing with their daughter with toys and a ball in the house.

Part 4

A film made during Christmas 1976. The Szumigaj family together with Łucja and Witek are showing little Ania the ornaments hanging on the Christmas tree and give the girl a present – a big teddy bear. The family is walking by the old cemetery, little Ania is sleeping in her pram and the adults are fooling around and throwing snowballs.
