description

Eugeniusz Małanicz was born in 1904 in Zelczyn. He was an electrical engineer by education, and a passionate moviegoer and collector of films and film cameras. In 1925, he founded a travelling cinema “Oaza”, touring the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Although the business went bankrupt after a year, the passion for cinematography remained with Eugeniusz until his death. In December 1939, he moved with his family to Warsaw and settled in Saska Kępa. An important place in his life was Giby – a village in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, to which he traveled from the 40s. There he rested, kayaked and took pictures. Eugeniusz died in Giby in 1982, and the hood of his beloved car (Hansa) rested on his tombstone.

Part 1
The film was made in 1938 or 1939 in Janów in Silesia (now a part of the district of Janów-Nikiszowiec in Katowice). Eugeniusz’s wife (Ludwika), together with her sister  (Regina Surowiec), her husband (Jan Surowiec) and the couple’s son (Jurek), walks next to a coal mine.
Part 2
The film was made around 1943. In December 1939, Eugeniusz and Ludwika, together with their children (Janusz and Barbara) moved to Warsaw. The Małanicz family lived in a tenement house partially destroyed during the bombing at Obrońców Street in Saska Kępa. The family spends their free time on the beach at the Poniatowski Bridge. In the background, we can see Wał Miedzeszyński. Ela, Janusz and Basia play on the beach under the supervision of their parents. The siblings are also accompanied by their cousins (Jurek and Leszek Surowiec). Both families are relaxing on the beach. That day, many other Varsovians came to the Vistula River, sunbathing and swimming. We can also see sailing boats on the river. Ludwik Skiba, a painter and a friend, wades in the water, walking towards Eugeniusz, who films him. Children continue to play in the water and on the beach.
Part 3
Late summer or autumn. Basia (wearing a hood on her head), together with her brother Janusz (in a beret) and other children, plays in front of the tenement house. The Małanicz family and the Surowiec family walk along Obrońców Street. Once they are by the Vistula River, the families play and fool around.
Part 4
Basia plays in the living room in the apartment at Obrońców Street.
Part 5
Winter. The Małanicz family walk around Saska Kępa. Children go sledding and play in the snow.
